This is especially disturbing because of the wide variety of age appropriate, culturally informed literature that is available these days, as opposed to when I was a kid 30 years ago. Honestly its just pitiful. I read so much academic writing that sometimes I just need a fantasy or two as an escape.

I in no way think that kids should be avid readers of these books though. While I admit that I did drift into Donald Goines during my high school years (I know!), as an adult, I have taken a strong position against street fiction as an adult. Both of my brothers (21 and 45) love to read, but only read street Sapphirehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14191233668653651869noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6386759355610512412.post-45280161167870683752008-10-24T21:27:00.000-04:002008-10-24T21:27:00.000-04:00Thank you so much! I'm so tired of people thinking that the only way to be Black means living in the projects and that living in the projects means loving street fiction. In fact, sometimes we hold ourselves to this stereotype too. I was an English major and have very diverse taste in books: Jane Austen, J.R.R. Tolkien, Toni Morrison, etc.Melissahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06281356809800081858noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6386759355610512412.post-25076518849210121292008-10-24T17:49:00.000-04:002008-10-24T17:49:00.000-04:00You, Denene, are beyond inspirational! ~melody~You, Denene, are beyond inspirational!

~melody~Pennies In My Pockethttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15064698793414279967noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6386759355610512412.post-75744163412952694302008-10-24T12:58:00.000-04:002008-10-24T12:58:00.000-04:00You would think that NYT would do a better job at ...You would think that NYT would do a better job at finding parents that represent the diversity of black families.
