The Princess and the Frog's Princess Tiana made history this weekend when she was officially crowned the ninth member of the Disney Princess Royal Court. The magical ceremony, which took place in the Grand Ballroom at the historic New York Palace in Manhattan, means that Tiana, Disney's first black princess, will forever be celebrated and recognized as a Disney Princess across all divisions of the Walt Disney Company, right alongside Ariel, Aurora, Belle, Cinderella, Jasmine, Mulan, Pocahontas, and Snow White.
How about that?!
I've written HERE and HERE about the importance of Princess Tiana and her movie, The Princess and the Frog, to little black girls everywhere. But this—this takes the character to a whole 'nother level. For the first time ever, I'm actually excited about taking my girls to Disney, particularly knowing that my girls will be able to shake the hand of a princess who looks like them. Mari and Lila? Let's just say they're applying the pressure, and we'll be seeing Tiana up close and personal really soon if they have anything to do with it.
In the meantime, while they're waiting for the in-person meet-and-greet, Mari and Lila are going to settle down in front of the TV this evening to watch the three-time Academy Award-nominated The Princess and the Frog on Disney Blu-Ray. It's being released today and I'm going straight to the store this morning to get our copy so my girls can relive the magic of Tiana meeting her frog prince, kissing his froggy lips, and going on an exciting adventure through the mystical, magical bayous of Louisiana. They can't wait (I suspect that getting them to do their homework and eat their dinner will be quite easy tonight!), and I can't either.
Want to relive the magic with your babies? I'm giving away THREE The Princess and the Frog DVDs on MyBrownBaby this week—each one to be chosen randomly by my little princesses, Mari and Lila, over the weekend. All you have to do is leave a comment naming your favorite Disney movie or character. It's that simple!
If you want an extra entry, tweet it out, with a link to this post. (Be sure to leave a link to your tweet in the comments). You can tweet up to three times for three extra entries.
The winners will be announced on Monday, March 22, 2010. Please be sure to link to your blog in the comments or email me your contact info at denenemillner at gmail dot com so that if you win, I have a way to let you know.
Good luck!

Can't tell you how excited I was to see Tiana on the big screen! When we went to Disney World two years ago, my daughter sobbed for hours because, she said, she couldn't be a princess since "princesses arent' brown". Broke my heart and lit a fire under me to have many loooooong conversations with the Disney exective offices. The look of peace and contentment on her face as we watched the movie was just priceless!
ReplyDeleteI don't have any children yet, but I would love to share this with them in the future. My favorite Disney movie princess was Ariel. Thanks for hosting the give-away.
ReplyDeleteMy girls love PT and I personally can't wait to see the movie - is it sad that they have seen the movie three times in the theater (TWo grandmothers and a grandpa took them on three separate movie trips - I thought four would be pushing it...) but I haven't had the pleasure..
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Disney movie for years was the little mermaid - but as an adult I love pixar movies and my favorite is Up...
Love Tiana, but Minnie is my gal!
ReplyDeleteWinks & Smiles,
Wifey
My fave Disney movie is "Cinderella". Good luck everyone.

ReplyDeleteI love Princess and the Frog and Tiana. It was so great to see my baby's eyes light up watching the movie on the big screen.
ReplyDeleteI love Princess Tiana, she is the first of my favorites in Disney. It was long overdue! My kids really enjoyed the movie and the music.

I love this contest. Inspired by a similar contest on MotherontheRise, I am doing a drawing at the end of the week in my reading classes (6th, 7th and 8th graders)for a copy of the movie. They say they are entering for their siblings :). And, every time they make a particularly insightful comment, volunteer to read aloud, praise another student's efforts or just try hard they get their name entered into the bucket! I am also buying my copy tonight too--for my little brown prince--who loved the movie too! (the other little brown prince doesn't have the patience for a movie yet..). Love the picture you included too.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite Disney character--Sully from Monster's Inc.
I am a huge Snow White fan. It's the first princess movie I saw as a child. Now that I'm an adult, I appreciate it even more for the ground-breaking film making that it was so many years ago. Snow White changed the cinema forever.

ReplyDeleteI really like Giselle from the live-action Disney movie Enchanted because she saves her prince in the end

As a child, Cinderella was my favorite but after having girls and seeing Mulan she has become a household favorite...after Princess Tiana, of course!

One giant leap for little brown girls, but a giant thud for little brown boys. I left the theater feeling a bit sick regarding that fact. My son gets to feel like he cannot be a prince, unless he straightens his hair of course...
ReplyDeleteMy niece and now my daughter have watched Disney's The Parent Trap to death. I am loving the movie as well now myself. That's our favorite pick!
ReplyDeleteMy sis will be at Disney next week, so hopefully she'll see her in the parade.

My favorite Disney princess is a tie between Ariel & Belle. I loved both the Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast! I'm not a hopeless romantic, but something about those stories stands out for me and I love them. I also liked Mulan because she was a fighter. And Giselle from Enchanted because of her innocent and optimistic nature. But I'd definitely say that Ariel tops the list as my favorite. Also love your blog and plan to continue reading.
ReplyDeleteI have always loved The Lion King, but I am happy to add TP&TF to my collection for my baby girl once she arrives.

We took our son to see the movie and he loved it! He sat in a booster chair and ate a whole tub of popcorn all by himself! pretty impressive considering he's 2 1/2 :)
ReplyDeleteI think my favorite Disney princess has to be Giselle from Enchanted (not a cartoon I know but she's still my fave) I love that she consistently had a positive outlook on EVERYTHING! I need that...:)
There's no question Tiana is my fave! I took my kids to see the premiere in NY and they had such a blast. I really like Tiana because not only is she brown and identifiable for my children, but she is sassy with a strong work ethic and not only looking for love like some of the other princesses. And THAT is a value I want my children to learn.
ReplyDeleteActually, my favorite is Mulan. Tiana comes second.
